40mm thick counter top I had lying around for the bench top. 200mm long board for the sides.
Back when I only had two bicycle carcasses cluttering up my garage - oh, the good old days.
Detail of the back hinge. The workbench will fold up on this hinge. The particle board felt a bit flimsy, so I put a piece of steel bent into an "L" shape to strengthen it up.
The bits taken out.
Another angle
Bending and grinding the "L" inserts into shape.
Some tools, my bike ...
The front-left hinge set-up, seen from underneath.
Getting serious. Skipped a few steps in the sequence. These are the front legs. The vertical is 25mm square tubing, 1.5mm thick; the round tubing is 25mm in diameter, 1.5 thick. Tack welded here. It gets ugly from here on in.
Before welding the bottom support beam into place. Top hinges: short tube is welded to the square tubing to make it stand out from the countertop. This is to make it possible to fold it up.
The standouts, with the legs bolted into place. That was the first thing I ever welded.
From the side. The whole thing is pretty wobbly when standing free, but once it's fixed to the wall, it'll be fine. The countertop folds up to the right and is flush with the boards on the side, leaving room to hang up tools behind.
Weld attempt number one. No photos of the grinding, then the welding, then the grinding, then the welding, etc.
Check out that bead! Lovely! Not to mention the heat distortion all that welding induced.
Ain't pretty, but it's holding.
Pieces falling into place - it actually looks like a workbench now.
You may have noticed a few more bikes in the back ...
To hold the front legs in place.
Another closeup of the front-top hinge.
The wooden horizontal support bar is hinged at the back and will fold up with the rest of it. More to come when I get the time.
Had an idea to use some old steel shelving. Tin snips and a wrench, bolts and screws ...
Will cut a shelf to size for the middle once it's all measured out and ready to be mounted.
View from the side, you can see where I need make notches for the bracked.
Even better side view.
More or less what it will look like.
Taking shape ....
