Like all Commonwealth War Graves cemetaries I have seen, this one is exceptionally well cared for. Despite the drought during the summer, roses and lush grass around the grave of a Maori soldier from 28 Battalion of the New Zealand Division.
The guardian?
A Zikada blocking the entrance. We took the side-gate.
Souda Bay Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetary viewed from the entrance, with the bay in the back.
History of the battle.
Dedication plaque.
The southern shore of the bay in the background, and the hills where the road to Sphakia and Heraklion begins.
A joint grave of a gunner and an RASC soldier.
The unknown soldiers, sailors, and airmen section of the cemetary. I do not know which one is more depressing - this, or the headstones with names and units on them.
An air crew joint grave. The Squadron Leader buried here was only 24 and highly decorated.
